noise, shouting, uproar; clamor of crowds or tumult of storm
A plural noun denoting loud, chaotic sounds—whether human or natural. Isaiah 22:2 describes Jerusalem as a city 'full of noise,' a tumultuous urban uproar. Zechariah 4:7 envisions the temple capstone set with 'shouts' of acclamation. Job uses it for the thunderous roar of God's storm (36:29) and notes that the wild donkey doesn't hear 'the shouts' of a taskmaster (39:7). One text (Job 30:22, ketiv) may refer to the roar of a storm into which Job is dissolved.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Captures loud, often confused or multiple sounds—celebratory shouting, urban clamor, thunder's roar. The Spanish 'alboroto' (commotion) and 'aclamaciones' (acclamations) reflect both disorderly and ceremonial noise. Job's storm imagery uses this for overwhelming natural tumult, while Zechariah envisions ritual acclamation. The wild donkey passage contrasts natural freedom with the shouted commands of human masters—sounds the untamed beast never hears. 4×
