1. detest, make detestable — Piel denominative verb from sheqets (detestable thing), meaning to regard as an abomination, treat as ritually detestable, or make oneself abominable. Used in dietary law contexts commanding Israel to detest unclean creatures (Lev 11:11, 13) and not to make themselves detestable by contact with swarming things (Lev 11:43; 20:25). In Deut 7:26 the Israelite must utterly detest devoted things (infinitive absolute + imperfect for emphasis). In Ps 22:25 God has not abhorred the affliction of the afflicted.
