To be quiet, at rest, undisturbed; of lands at peace after war, of persons in tranquility; causatively, to give rest or calm.
A verb conveying the deep stillness that follows turmoil — the hush of a land after war, the calm of a soul at rest. In Judges, the recurring refrain 'and the land was quiet (shaqat) forty years' marks the rhythm of Israel's deliverance cycles (Judg 3:11, 30; 5:31; 8:28). The Spanish 'reposó' and French 'tranquille' both capture this sense of settled peace. In its causative form, God is the one who 'gives rest' and 'calms' — even the south wind that quiets the earth (Job 37:17). The word spans the full arc from external peace to inner stillness.
1. be quiet, be at rest — The basic intransitive sense: to be in a state of quietness, rest, or undisturbedness. Frequently describes a land at peace after military conflict, as in the recurring Judges formula 'and the land was quiet' (Judg 3:11, 5:31). Spanish 'reposó' and French 'était quiet' reinforce the sense of settled calm. Also used of personal rest, as in Job 3:13, 26 where Job laments the quiet he never found. 26×

2. quiet, at ease (adjectival/substantival) — The Qal participle functioning adjectivally or as a substantive, describing a person, people, or place as characteristically quiet, settled, and undisturbed. The spies in Judges 18:7 found a people 'quiet and secure,' and Ezekiel 38:11 speaks of those 'living quietly' in unwalled villages. The multilingual glosses — Spanish 'quieto,' German 'still' — all converge on habitual peacefulness rather than a momentary event. 6×

3. quietness, rest (nominal) — The Hiphil infinitive absolute used as an abstract noun denoting the state or condition of quietness, rest, or tranquility itself. Isaiah 30:15 famously declares 'in quietness (hashqet) and trust shall be your strength,' and Isaiah 32:17 links it with righteousness. Jeremiah 49:23 uses it negatively — the sea that 'cannot be quiet.' This nominal use elevates shaqat from a verb of description to a concept of theological weight. 5×

4. give rest, make quiet (causative) — The Hiphil causative sense: to cause someone to be quiet, to grant rest, or to calm. God is typically the implicit or explicit agent. In Psalm 94:13 God 'gives rest' to the afflicted from days of trouble. Proverbs 15:18 notes that a patient person 'calms' (yashqit) a quarrel. Spanish 'apacigua' (pacifies) nicely captures the active, relational dimension — this is rest bestowed, not merely experienced. 5×
