Hatred; deep hostility or aversion, whether human enmity, sexual revulsion, or divine displeasure.
The primary abstract noun for hatred in the Hebrew Bible, sin'ah covers a spectrum from personal animosity to national enmity to theological judgment. Proverbs contrasts it with love: 'hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses' (Prov 10:12). In 2 Samuel 13:15 it names the violent sexual revulsion Amnon felt toward Tamar -- a hatred 'greater than the love' he had feigned. The Psalms apply it to the hostility surrounding the righteous (Ps 25:19; 109:3, 5), and Deuteronomy uses it of God's supposed hatred to describe Israel's faithless accusation against the LORD (Deut 1:27; 9:28).
Senses
1. hatred (as emotion or disposition) — Hatred as an emotion, disposition, or sustained hostile attitude. In wisdom literature it opposes love ('ahavah) and produces strife and concealment (Prov 10:12, 18; 15:17; 26:26). In narrative it can denote intense sexual revulsion (2 Sam 13:15). The Psalms speak of 'words of hatred' surrounding the innocent (Ps 109:3, 5) and of righteous hatred of God's enemies (Ps 139:22). Deuteronomy records Israel's bitter charge that God brought them out of Egypt 'out of hatred' (Deut 1:27; 9:28), and Ezekiel 35:11 attributes destructive hatred to Edom. 17×
