Shimrith was a Moabite woman, mother of Jehozabad who participated in the assassination of King Joash of Judah. Her Moabite origin is emphasized in Chronicles' account, possibly suggesting foreign influence in the conspiracy against Joash. The parallel account in Kings calls her Shomer (masculine form), representing either a textual variant or indicating that the same person had both a masculine and feminine form of the name. Joash's murder came as judgment for his apostasy after the death of Jehoiada the priest. That one of the conspirators had a Moabite mother may indicate the international dimensions of court intrigue.
