Hem, skirt, or train of a garment, used of priestly robes, God's robe in vision, and metaphors of shame
Refers to the lower edge or flowing skirt of a robe, always plural in form. In the tabernacle instructions, golden bells and pomegranates are hung upon the hems of the high priest's robe of the ephod (Exod 28:33–34; 39:24–26), where they announce his movements in God's presence. Isaiah beholds the Lord seated on a throne, and his train fills the temple (Isa 6:1) — a vision of overwhelming majesty. The prophets then turn the image inside out: Jeremiah and Nahum speak of skirts being lifted and exposed as a figure of national humiliation and judgment (Jer 13:22, 26; Nah 3:5), and Lamentations finds the blood of innocents in Jerusalem's skirts (Lam 1:9).

Senses
1. hem, skirt, train of a garment The hem, skirt, or train at the lower edge of a garment, used in three interconnected registers: priestly vestments where bells and pomegranates adorn the hems of the ephod robe (Exod 28:33–34; 39:24–26), theophanic vision where God's train fills the temple (Isa 6:1), and prophetic metaphor where exposed or bloodied skirts signify shame and guilt (Jer 13:22, 26; Nah 3:5; Lam 1:9). Korean distinguishes 단 (dan, hem/border) for priestly contexts from 옷자락 (otjarak, garment-skirt) for the metaphorical shame passages; Arabic uses أَذْيَال (adhyal, trains/skirts) throughout; Spanish shifts between 'bordes' (edges) and 'faldas' (skirts) — revealing how the literal-to-metaphorical range is handled differently across languages. 11×
