This is the name of a son of Dan and ancestor of the Shuhamite clan. Numbers 26:42 lists the Shuhamites as the family group descended from him within the tribe of Dan. Interestingly, the corresponding passage in Genesis 46:23 calls this same person Hushim, showing variant name forms for the same individual. Such variations were common in biblical genealogies. The Shuhamites constituted Dan's primary family group in the census—in fact, the census lists only this one clan for Dan, suggesting either simplification of the genealogical record or actual demographic dominance of this family within the tribe.
