Open square, plaza, broad place — the public space in a city, typically near the gate
A feminine noun from the root r-kh-b ('to be wide, broad'), denoting the open public space within or at the entrance of a city. Unlike the narrow street (khutz), the rekhov was a broad plaza near the city gate where assemblies gathered, justice was administered, merchants traded, and travelers could lodge (Gen 19:2; Judg 19:15-20). The word appears in poetic parallelism with 'streets' and 'marketplaces' (Prov 26:13; Song 3:2) and in prophetic visions of restored urban life where elders and children again fill the squares (Zech 8:4-5).
