town, city (poetic/late form)
A late poetic synonym for the more common Hebrew words for city. It appears exclusively in wisdom literature: Job uses it for his own city gate where he sat as an elder (Job 29:7), while Proverbs deploys it for personified Wisdom's urban stage, calling out at the city heights and gates (Prov 8:3; 9:3, 14). In Proverbs 11:11 the city represents a corporate community blessed or ruined by its inhabitants. The Phoenician cognate qart appears in place names like Carthage (Qart-Hadasht, 'new city').
Senses
1. sense 1 — A poetic and elevated term for a walled settlement or urban community. Spanish and English both render it straightforwardly as 'ciudad'/'city,' while French uses the more literary 'cité.' All five occurrences sit in wisdom poetry (Job, Proverbs), suggesting the form carried a dignified or archaic register. In Proverbs 11:11 it denotes the city as a body politic, not merely a physical location. 5×
