To be lightly esteemed, dishonored, held in contempt (Niphal); to dishonor, treat with contempt (Hiphil)
A parallel form of the more common qalal ('to be light'), this verb focuses specifically on social dishonor and the reversal of esteem. In its Niphal (passive) uses, it describes people or nations reduced to insignificance: David calls himself 'poor and lightly esteemed' before Saul (1 Sam 18:23), Isaiah prophesies that Moab's glory 'shall be dishonored' (Isa 16:14), and Proverbs 12:9 contrasts the self-important man unfavorably with one who is 'lowly.' The single Hiphil occurrence carries the weight of covenant curse: 'Cursed is the one who dishonors his father or mother' (Deut 27:16), directly inverting the Fifth Commandment's 'honor.'
Senses
1. to be lightly esteemed, dishonored (Niphal) — To be lightly esteemed, held in contempt, or dishonored (Niphal passive/stative). Describes social diminishment: Isaiah 3:5 pairs the 'base' (niqle) against the 'honorable' (nikhbad). First Samuel 18:23 has David calling himself poor and niqle. Spanish 'despreciado' and English 'lightly esteemed' consistently render the passive sense of lost social standing. 5×

2. to dishonor (Hiphil) — To dishonor or treat with contempt (Hiphil causative). Occurs solely in the covenant-curse formula of Deuteronomy 27:16, where one who 'dishonors' (maqleh) father or mother stands cursed. Spanish 'el que deshonrare' captures the deliberate, causative act that directly opposes the command to 'honor' (kabbed) one's parents. 1×
