Former state, previous condition; origin or beginning; temporal 'before' (Aramaic-influenced)
Derived from the root q-d-m ('front, east, ancient'), qadmah denotes what came before -- whether a previous condition to which something may return, or the very origin and beginning of a thing. Ezekiel uses it repeatedly in restoration promises: Sodom and Samaria will return to their 'former state' (Ezek 16:55), and Israel will be made better than their 'former times' (Ezek 36:11). Isaiah 23:7 applies it to Tyre's ancient origin. In Psalm 129:6, the construct form functions almost as a conjunction meaning 'before,' an Aramaism reflecting the word's temporal flexibility. Spanish 'antiguedad' captures both the antiquity and former-condition senses elegantly.
1. former state, previous condition Former state or previous condition, especially in prophetic contexts of restoration. Ezekiel 16:55 uses the suffixed form three times promising return to a prior state for Sodom, Samaria, and Jerusalem. Ezekiel 36:11 extends this to Israel's 'former times.' Spanish 'antiguedad' and English 'former state' converge on the restorative sense.

2. origin, beginning, before (temporal) Origin, beginning, or temporal 'before,' referring to the earliest point of existence or a time prior to a given event. Isaiah 23:7 speaks of Tyre's 'origin' reaching back to antiquity. Psalm 129:6 uses the construct as an Aramaic-influenced temporal conjunction meaning 'before (it) plucked up.' German 'welcher-vor' and Spanish 'que antes de' preserve this temporal-conjunctive nuance.
