birds (Aramaic, collective or plural)
The Aramaic word for birds, appearing exclusively in Daniel 4 in Nebuchadnezzar's dream and its interpretation. The great tree in the dream sheltered 'the birds of the heavens' in its branches, representing the vast reach of Nebuchadnezzar's empire. After the king's humiliation, the birds are told to flee from the tree. Later, when the king is restored, the birds again find shelter. The birds symbolize the far-flung peoples and kingdoms under Babylonian protection and dominion.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Daniel 4:12 (Aramaic 4:9) describes the birds dwelling in the tree's branches. Daniel 4:14 (4:11) commands 'let the birds flee from its branches.' Daniel 4:21 (4:18) repeats that 'the birds of the heavens' dwelt in its branches. Daniel 4:33 (4:30) may reference birds (or bird-like features) during the king's beast-like state. Spanish aves (birds) and French oiseau (bird) consistently identify this as avian creatures, used symbolically for subject peoples. 4×
