1. thirsty — Adjective describing a person or land in a state of thirst, lacking water. Primarily used in literal contexts for physical thirst, often paired with or parallel to ra'ev (hungry): David's men thirsty in the wilderness (2 Sam 17:29), wanderers hungry and thirsty (Ps 107:5), and the proverbial instruction to give water to a thirsty enemy (Prov 25:21). Prominent in Isaiah's prophetic rhetoric both literally (Isa 21:14 bring water to the thirsty; 29:8 the thirsty dream of drinking) and in the great eschatological invitation (Isa 55:1 'everyone who thirsts, come to the waters'). Also in the metaphorical destruction context of Deut 29:19 where the well-watered is swept away with the thirsty. Arabic zam'an/atshan (thirsty), German durstig (thirsty), Spanish sediento (thirsty), French assoiffe (thirsty), Hindi pyasa/pyase (thirsty), Korean mongmareun (thirsty). All auto-clusters are purely inflectional variants (masculine singular, feminine singular, masculine plural, with article, with conjunction) of the single adjectival sense. 9×
