Conj-w  |  164× in 2 senses
Opening, entrance, doorway; the passage into a tent, house, temple, or city, occasionally the door or gate structure itself.
The standard Hebrew word for an entrance or doorway — the space through which one passes to enter a tent, house, temple, cave, or city. It appears most memorably as 'the entrance of the tent' where Abraham receives his visitors (Gen 18:1) and 'the entrance of the Tent of Meeting' in the Priestly legislation. Spanish entrada-de and French entrée-de consistently mark the spatial-passage sense. A secondary cluster uses it for the door or gate as a physical object — something that can be opened, shut, or smeared with blood (Exod 12:22-23). Gen 4:7's haunting 'sin crouches at the door' exploits this ambiguity between passage and barrier.

Senses
1. entrance or opening The opening, entryway, or doorway of a tent, tabernacle, temple, house, cave, or city — the space or threshold one passes through to enter. This is the dominant usage across 148 occurrences, typically in construct form ('entrance of the tent,' 'entrance of the gate'). Spanish entrada-de, French entrée-de, and German Eingang-von all render this spatial-passage meaning faithfully. Gen 18:1 places Abraham at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day; Exod 29:4 stations the priests at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. 148×

2. door or gate The door or gate as a physical structure — something that can be opened, shut, guarded, or marked. By metonymy, the word shifts from the passageway to the closure itself. In Exod 12:22-23, blood is applied to the doorposts and lintel of 'the door' (the structure, not the opening). Gen 4:7 personifies sin crouching 'at the door,' and Gen 6:16 describes the door Noah sets in the ark. Translations here pivot to 'door' or 'gate' (spa puerta, fra porte), distinguishing this from the entrance-passage sense. Job 31:9 extends it figuratively to a neighbor's door as a site of temptation. 16×
