nobles, high officials, aristocrats (Persian term)
This Persian loan-word denotes nobles or high-ranking officials, the aristocratic elite of the empire. Esther 1:3 describes Ahasuerus' grand banquet for 'his nobles and officials'—the empire's power structure on display. Esther 6:9 commands that Mordecai be honored: 'let the robe and horse be handed over to one of the king's most noble officials'—someone of sufficient rank to lead the procession. Daniel 1:3 has Nebuchadnezzar command bringing 'some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility'—selecting elite captives for Babylonian court training. The term consistently indicates the highest social stratum, those closest to royal power.
