1. hew, carve into shape — To hew or carve stone or wood into a desired shape, used exclusively in the Qal stem for cutting stone tablets (Exod 34:1,4; Deut 10:1,3) and shaping building stones (1 Kgs 5:18), as well as the act of carving an idol image (Hab 2:18). All languages consistently use carving/cutting vocabulary: Arabic nahata (hew), German schneiden/geschnitzt (cut/carved), Spanish labrar (to work stone), Hindi tarash (carve), Korean kkakda (chisel).
