Astuto o sagaz — en sentido positivo: prudente, sensato (Proverbios); en sentido negativo: taimado, artero (Gn 3:1; Job)
Este adjetivo se mueve en el filo entre la sabiduría y el engaño. En Proverbios es enteramente positivo: la persona עָרוּם prevé el peligro y se resguarda (22:3; 27:12), actúa con conocimiento (13:16) y se contrapone al necio (פְּתִי) y al simple. Sin embargo, en Génesis 3:1 la serpiente es descrita como עָרוּם más que cualquier animal del campo: astuta al servicio del engaño. Job 5:12 y 15:5 también lo emplean negativamente, hablando de «las maquinaciones de los astutos» y «la lengua de los taimados». Una misma raíz abarca así todo el espectro de la inteligencia aguda, desde el discernimiento encomiable hasta la astucia manipuladora; solo el contexto determina qué polo está en juego.

2. Astuto, taimado — Astuto, taimado, artero: describe la sagacidad puesta al servicio del engaño o la manipulación. Génesis 3:1 presenta a la serpiente como עָרוּם por encima de toda criatura, estableciendo el polo negativo del campo semántico. Job 5:12 advierte que Dios frustra «las maquinaciones de los astutos» y Job 15:5 acusa al impío de elegir «la lengua de los taimados». 3×
