En Lv 23:40, se recogen ramas de sauces del arroyo para la Fiesta de los Tabernaculos. El celebre Sal 137:2 retrata a los exiliados colgando sus arpas en los sauces junto a los rios de Babilonia. En Is 44:4, los justos brotan 'como sauces junto a corrientes de agua.' Job 40:22 situa este arbol en el habitat del Behemot, subrayando su asociacion constante con ambientes humedos y riberas fluviales.
