Eber, descendant of Shem through Arpachshad and traditional ancestor of the Hebrew peoples.
ʿĒver is the great-grandson of Shem and father of Peleg and Joktan, positioned in the Table of Nations as the eponymous ancestor of the Hebrews (Gen 10:21, 24–25; 11:14–17). Shem is called 'father of all the sons of Eber,' a phrase that sweeps together both the Abrahamic line through Peleg and the Arabian tribes through Joktan. The Chronicler preserves the same genealogy (1 Chr 1:18–19, 25), while Balaam's oracle enigmatically warns that ships from Kittim will afflict ʿĒver (Num 24:24), possibly meaning 'the Hebrews' as a collective. A postexilic priest also bears the name (Neh 12:20). Spanish 'Heber' and Greek Εβερ both reflect the ancient Septuagint vocalization.

Senses
1. Eber (personal name) The personal name Eber (עֵבֶר), borne primarily by the Shemite patriarch listed in Genesis 10–11 and 1 Chronicles 1 as ancestor of both the Hebrew and Arabian lines. The name likely derives from the root ʿ-b-r ('to cross over'), connecting etymologically to ʿivrî ('Hebrew'). Shem's title 'father of all the sons of Eber' (Gen 10:21) gives the name a corporate, ethnographic dimension beyond the individual. A secondary bearer appears among postexilic Levitical priests (Neh 12:20). 15×
