Be stubborn, rebellious — to resist authority defiantly, especially Israel's obstinate refusal to obey God or a son's defiance of parents.
A verb capturing obstinate defiance and willful resistance to rightful authority. Hosea 4:16 provides the memorable simile: 'like a stubborn heifer, Israel is stubborn,' comparing the nation's spiritual intransigence to an animal that refuses the yoke. The participial form sorer appears as an adjective in the law of the rebellious son (Deuteronomy 21:18, 20) and in prophetic indictments of Israel as 'rebellious children' (Isaiah 30:1; 65:2). Even Proverbs 7:11 applies it to the wayward woman who is 'loud and rebellious.' Spanish 'rebelde' and French 'rebelle' consistently render the moral-spiritual dimension of active, willful resistance.
Senses
1. be stubborn, rebellious — To be stubborn, obstinate, or rebellious, denoting willful resistance to legitimate authority — primarily God's covenant lordship over Israel but also parental authority. The participial forms function adjectivally in most occurrences: the 'stubborn and rebellious son' of Deuteronomy 21:18, Israel as a 'stubborn heifer' in Hosea 4:16, and 'rebellious children' in Isaiah 30:1. Psalm 66:7 and 68:6-18 use the substantive to denote 'the rebellious' as those who dwell in a parched land. Spanish 'rebelde' and English 'rebellious/stubborn' converge on the sense of active, defiant resistance. 17×
