N-mp  |  5× in 1 sense
chief, high commissioner; a senior administrative official (Aramaic loanword from Persian)
Borrowed from Persian (sar, 'head, chief'), this Aramaic term designates a high-ranking government commissioner or prefect. All five occurrences cluster in Daniel 6, where three sarekhin are appointed over the 120 satraps of the Medo-Persian empire. Daniel himself is elevated among them, provoking the jealousy that leads to the lion's den episode.

Senses
1. sense 1 A high-ranking imperial commissioner or prefect set over provincial governors — exclusively in Daniel 6:2-7, where Darius appoints three such officials to oversee the satraps. Spanish 'gobernadores' and French 'préfet' both capture the administrative authority of the role. The term is a Persian loanword reflecting the bureaucratic vocabulary that entered Aramaic during the Achaemenid period.
