end, conclusion, final point of a matter, place, or process
A late Hebrew synonym for the more common qets, denoting the terminal point of something whether spatial, temporal, or conceptual. It marks the end of a wadi where Jehoshaphat's army found plunder (2 Chr 20:16), the rear of a locust swarm driven into the sea (Joel 2:20), and the incomprehensible scope of God's work from beginning to end (Eccl 3:11). In Ecclesiastes 12:13, it serves as the grand summation: the conclusion of the whole matter. The breadth of the Spanish glosses—'al-final-de,' 'el-fin,' 'fin-de'—mirrors this versatility.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The terminal point, conclusion, or final extent of something—whether a physical location (end of a wadi, 2 Chr 20:16), a natural phenomenon (rear of a locust swarm, Joel 2:20), or an abstract matter (conclusion of all instruction, Eccl 12:13). English 'end,' Spanish 'fin/el-fin,' French 'fin,' and German 'Ende' uniformly reflect termination. Ecclesiastes 3:11 uses it theologically: God's work stretches from beginning to 'soph,' beyond human comprehension. 5×
