Senses
1. bow down, prostrate oneself in worship — To prostrate oneself in worship or veneration, used exclusively in Isaiah 44-46 in the context of idol worship. In Isa 44:15,17,19 the craftsman makes an idol and 'bows down' (יִסְגָּד / אֶסְגּוֹד) to it; in Isa 46:6 people 'bow down' (יִסְגְּדוּ) to a crafted god. Probably an Aramaic loanword in Hebrew (cf. Daniel's Aramaic סגד). Uniformly translated across languages: Arabic يَسْجُدُ (same root as Islamic sujud/prostration), Korean 절하다, Hindi झुकना, Spanish postrarse/inclinarse, French se prosterner. The preposition לוֹ ('to it') in Isa 44:17 is the indirect object of this verb, not a separate sense. Ketiv/qere variants at Isa 44:17 are orthographic, not semantic. 6×
