Nergal-Sharezer; a Babylonian official present at the fall of Jerusalem, bearing a name meaning 'Nergal, protect the king.'
A compound Akkadian proper name borne by a Babylonian official in Nebuchadnezzar's entourage during the siege and fall of Jerusalem in 586 BCE. The name combines the Babylonian deity Nergal with the prayer element 'protect the king' (shar-usur). He appears in Jeremiah 39:3,13, where he is listed among the officials who entered Jerusalem after its walls were breached, and who later facilitated the release of Jeremiah from prison at Nebuchadnezzar's command.

1. Nergal-Saretser (Babylonian official) — The compound proper name of a Babylonian dignitary, Nergal-Sharezer (Akkadian Nergal-shar-usur, 'O Nergal, protect the king'), who held the title Rab-mag ('chief soothsayer' or 'chief official') in the army of Nebuchadnezzar II. In Jeremiah 39:3 he is named among those who sat in the middle gate of Jerusalem after its fall, and in Jer 39:13 he participates in the delegation that retrieves Jeremiah from the court of the guard. Some scholars identify him with the later Babylonian king Neriglissar (560-556 BCE). 7×
