Wadi, torrente estacional, arroyo — cauce o barranco que fluye en época de lluvias y se seca en verano; a veces río perenne o torrentera.
Nachal designa uno de los rasgos más característicos del paisaje levantino: el cauce estacional que talla un valle entre las rocas, corre como arroyo en los meses de lluvia y queda seco en verano. La mayoría de sus 140 apariciones (~82x) se refieren a wadis con nombre propio — Cedrón, Arnón, Besor, Escol — como accidentes geográficos e hidrológicos a la vez. Pero nachal también puede subrayar el valle como terreno (Gn 26:17), describir un río o arroyo perenne en contextos de abundancia (Dt 8:7), o evocar la torrentera devastadora de las aguas de crecida repentina en la poesía (Sal 124:4). El árabe conserva una distinción similar entre wadi (estacional) y nahr (perenne).
