Nazirite consecration, separation; crown, diadem

Senses
1. Nazirite consecration, separation The state of consecration or separation associated with the Nazirite vow, denoting the period and status of being set apart for YHWH. Concentrated entirely in Numbers 6 (vv. 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13, 18, 19, 21) where the term appears 12 times for the Nazirite's vow period. Also Num 6:7 as 'consecration of his God upon his head.' Arabic renders نَذْر (nadhr 'vow'), Korean uses 구별 (gubyeol 'separation/distinction'), Spanish renders nazareato, and Hindi uses नाजीर (nazir). The Jer 7:29 occurrence (your consecrated hair) extends this metonymically to the uncut hair that symbolizes the vow, with Korean rendering 머리카락 ('hair') and Spanish cabellera ('long hair'). 14×

2. crown, diadem A physical crown or diadem worn as a sign of royal or priestly authority. Used of the priestly diadem (Exod 29:6, 39:30; Lev 8:9, 21:12 -- the golden plate on the turban), the royal crown (2 Sam 1:10 Saul's crown; 2 Kgs 11:12, 2 Chr 23:11 Joash's coronation), and metaphorically of God's crown on the Davidic king (Ps 89:39, 132:18). Also figurative in Prov 27:24 (a crown does not endure) and Zech 9:16 (crown-jewels). Arabic uses إكليل (iklil) and تاج (taj 'crown'), German Krone, Korean 관/면류관 (gwan/myeonlyugwan 'crown/diadem'), Spanish corona/diadema. The shift from Arabic نَذْر for the consecration sense to إكليل/تاج for the crown sense clearly marks the polysemy. 11×
