1. hinder, forbid, restrain — To hold back or prevent someone from carrying out an action, especially a vow or oath. Used in Hifil in the law of vows (Num 30:5, 8, 11) where a father or husband may annul a woman's vow by forbidding her. Also of God thwarting the counsel of the nations (Ps 33:10). 2. discourage, dishearten — To break the spirit or resolve of a group, causing them to lose courage for an undertaking. Used specifically of the discouraging report of the spies (Num 32:7, 9) where the Reubenites and Gadites are accused of discouraging the Israelites from crossing into Canaan. Multilingual glosses show a distinct semantic field from mere prohibition: Sp. desalentareis/desalentaron 'you will dishearten/they disheartened', Hin. todoge/toda 'you will break/broke [spirit]', Kor. namdamsikinya 'do you discourage'. 3×
