Gifts, rewards, or presents given in honor or compensation
This Aramaic loanword appears only in Daniel, referring to gifts or rewards given by a king. Twice King Nebuchadnezzar promises 'gifts' along with rewards and honor to whoever can interpret his dreams. When Daniel does interpret the king's dream, he is offered these gifts but initially declines, saying 'let your gifts be for yourself.' The term emphasizes royal generosity, the valuable presents a monarch bestows on those who serve him well or accomplish difficult tasks.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Gifts or rewards from a king. Daniel 2:6 promises: 'if you show the dream and its interpretation, you shall receive from me gifts, rewards, and great honor.' Verse 48 records fulfillment: 'the king gave Daniel gifts and many great rewards.' In 5:17, Daniel responds to Belshazzar: 'Let your gifts be for yourself, and give your rewards to another'—declining payment before interpreting the handwriting on the wall. The Aramaic plural forms and consistent 'gifts/rewards' rendering show royal patronage vocabulary. 3×
