A carved image or figured stone (often idolatrous); imagination or conceit; an ornamental setting or frame
At its core, maskit denotes something displayed or made visible -- a show-piece. In cultic contexts it refers to carved images or figured stones associated with idolatry, which the Torah explicitly forbids (Lev 26:1; Num 33:52). Ezekiel 8:12 uses it of the secret 'chambers of imagery' where elders worship painted abominations. Yet the same root can describe the inner life: in Psalm 73:7 the 'imaginations of their heart' overflow with arrogance. Most beautifully, Proverbs 25:11 transforms the word into an artisan's ornamental setting -- 'apples of gold in settings of silver' -- celebrating the craftsmanship of a well-chosen word.

Senses
1. carved image, figured stone A carved or engraved image, especially an idolatrous figured stone condemned by Israelite law. Leviticus 26:1 forbids setting up an 'even maskit' alongside pillars and idols; Numbers 33:52 commands Israel to destroy the Canaanites' figured stones. Ezekiel 8:12 extends this to painted wall-images in secret idol chambers. Translations converge on the visual-representational sense: Spanish 'imágenes,' French 'image,' English 'figured stones.'

2. imagination, conceit Imagination, conceit, or mental picture-making -- the inner counterpart to the external carved image. In Psalm 73:7 the psalmist observes the wicked whose 'imaginations of the heart' overflow beyond all bounds. Proverbs 18:11 uses it of the rich man's wealth as a high wall 'in his imagination' -- a false fortress of the mind. Spanish 'imaginación' and English 'imagination' reflect how maskit bridges the physical and psychological domains.

3. ornamental setting, frame An ornamental setting, decorative frame, or work of fine craftsmanship. Proverbs 25:11 compares a fitly spoken word to 'apples of gold in settings (maskiyyot) of silver,' using the term positively for artistry rather than idolatry. Spanish 'engastes' (settings, bezels) captures the jeweler's craft implied here, showing how the same root that can denote forbidden images also celebrates legitimate beauty.
