מִצְוָה es la palabra por excelencia para el mandamiento divino en la Biblia hebrea, con presencia abrumadora en Deuteronomio y los Salmos como las estipulaciones que Dios da a Israel para cumplir. 'El mandamiento es lámpara y la Torá es luz' (Pr 6:23) capta su carácter vivificante. Ya sea en singular — refiriéndose al cuerpo entero de la ley del pacto — o en plural — enumerando preceptos específicos —, מִצְוָה enmarca la obediencia como respuesta agradecida de Israel a la liberación divina.
