queen (of heaven) — a goddess title, likely referring to Ishtar or Astarte
Melekhet appears only in the phrase melekhet hashamayim, 'queen of heaven,' designating a goddess whom Judean women worshipped with incense, drink offerings, and cakes bearing her image. Jeremiah fiercely condemns this cult (Jer 7:18; 44:17-19, 25), and the women defiantly insist that prosperity attended their devotion. The deity is commonly identified with the Mesopotamian Ishtar (Venus) or Canaanite Astarte. Some scholars read the word as melekhet from melakhah ('work, worship'), but the traditional vocalization as 'queen' is widely accepted.

Senses
1. sense 1 A feminine noun meaning 'queen,' used exclusively in the construct phrase 'queen of heaven' to denote a goddess worshipped in pre-exilic and exilic Judah. German Koenigin and French reine both translate directly as 'queen,' while Spanish reina-del likewise preserves the royal title. Jeremiah 7:18 describes family-wide participation in the cult — children gathering wood, fathers kindling fire, women kneading dough for cakes. The four passages in Jeremiah 44 record the exiles in Egypt defending the practice, making this one of the most vivid windows into popular Judean religion.
