bowl, basin — a ritual vessel for catching and sprinkling sacrificial blood or presenting offerings
Mizraq derives from the root zaraq ('to throw, sprinkle') and names a basin designed for tossing or dashing liquids, appearing 32 times almost entirely in ritual contexts. The vast majority of occurrences are in Numbers 7, where each tribal prince presents a silver mizraq filled with fine flour and oil as a grain offering at the tabernacle dedication (Num 7:13-85, repeated twelve times in formulaic cadence). The priestly inventory lists it among the altar furnishings alongside shovels and forks (Exod 27:3; 38:3; Num 4:14), and Solomon's temple features both bronze and gold versions (1 Kgs 7:40-50). A single non-cultic use stands out: Amos condemns the Samarian elite who drink wine from mizraqim, co-opting sacred vessels for luxurious feasting (Amos 6:6). Zechariah envisions a day when even ordinary cooking pots will be as holy as the mizraqot before the altar (Zech 14:20).
Senses
1. sacrificial bowl or basin — A ritual bowl or basin used for catching, holding, and sprinkling sacrificial blood or presenting offerings. Named from zaraq ('to throw/sprinkle'), it is standard altar equipment (Exod 27:3; 38:3; Num 4:14). Twelve silver bowls filled with grain offerings dominate the tribal dedication in Numbers 7. Solomon's temple had both bronze and gold versions (1 Kgs 7:40-50). Amos 6:6 condemns secular misuse for wine-drinking; Zechariah 14:20 envisions universal holiness extending to these vessels. 32×
