Adj-mp  |  6× in 1 sense
Moist, fresh, green; describing what retains natural moisture and has not dried out or withered.
An adjective describing the state of being moist, fresh, or green -- the natural condition of living plants before they dry out. Jacob peels fresh poplar rods in the breeding stratagem of Genesis 30:37; the Nazirite must avoid even fresh grapes (Num 6:3); and Samson's captors bind him with new bowstrings that have not been dried (Judg 16:7-8). Ezekiel employs the contrast between green and dry wood as a parable of judgment: 'I will kindle a fire that shall devour every green tree and every dry tree' (Ezek 21:3; cf. 17:24). Spanish fresco/verde and German frisch capture this quality of living, undried freshness.

Senses
1. moist, fresh, green (not dried out) Describing something that retains its natural moisture and has not dried out, applied to vegetation, fruit, and materials. Fresh poplar rods that Jacob peeled (Gen 30:37); fresh grapes forbidden to the Nazirite (Num 6:3); new, undried bowstrings used to bind Samson (Judg 16:7-8). Ezekiel's green-versus-dry-tree metaphor (Ezek 17:24; 21:3) leverages this word's contrast with yabesh ('dry') for theological meaning: God can make the green tree wither and the dry tree flourish. Spanish fresco/verde and the Arabic cognates tariyy ('fresh') and ratb ('moist') all capture this semantic range of living, undesiccated freshness.
