1. turn aside, be devious — A poetic verb (mostly Wisdom Literature) meaning to turn aside, depart from the right way, and by extension to be crooked, devious, or perverse. In the Qal/Hiphil imperative-jussive forms it carries the sense of departing or straying from sight: 'let them not escape/depart from your eyes' (Prov 3:21; 4:21), referring to wisdom and understanding as things one must keep in view. In the Niphal participle it takes on a moral-evaluative sense describing persons or conduct as devious, crooked, or perverse: 'he who is devious in his ways' is despised (Prov 14:2), the devious person is an abomination to the LORD (Prov 3:32), devious persons whose paths are crooked (Prov 2:15), and Isaiah uses it of perverseness or moral crookedness in speech (Isa 30:12). The Qal and Niphal represent two facets of the same root -- physical turning aside and moral deviousness -- rather than truly distinct senses. 6×
