ancient Mesopotamian city from which Assyria transplanted colonists to Samaria
Cuthah was a Babylonian city located about 20 miles northeast of Babylon, modern Tel Ibrahim. After conquering the northern kingdom, the Assyrian king Sargon transported colonists from Cuthah to repopulate Samaria (2 Kings 17:24, 30). These Cuthean settlers brought their worship of Nergal, contributing to the religious syncretism that characterized post-exilic Samaria. The city's Akkadian name was Kūtu or Kūtê, and it served as an important cult center in Mesopotamia.
Sentidos
1. sense 1 — A significant Babylonian city whose inhabitants were forcibly relocated to Israel as part of Assyrian resettlement policy. The men of Cuth brought their native deity Nergal with them, establishing foreign worship in the land. This transplantation of populations was a deliberate imperial strategy to prevent nationalist uprisings by disrupting ethnic and religious cohesion. 2×
