Peg, pin, or stake used to secure tents, anchor structures, or serve as a tool in weaving
The Hebrew yathed denotes a peg or pin driven into the ground or a wall. Most frequently it appears in Exodus and Numbers as the pegs securing the tabernacle curtains and ropes, paired with the cords (metharim) that held God's dwelling taut. In Judges 4-5, Jael's tent peg becomes an unforgettable weapon. Isaiah uses it metaphorically: Zion's stakes will never be pulled up (33:20), and her boundaries must be enlarged (54:2). The word also describes a weaving pin (Judg 16:14) and a peg fixed in a sure place for hanging vessels (Isa 22:23-25), where it symbolizes a dependable leader.
Senses
1. tent peg — The standard tent peg — a pointed wooden or metal spike hammered into the ground to anchor ropes and curtains. Dominates the tabernacle descriptions in Exodus 27, 35, 38-39 and Numbers 3-4, where the pegs are consistently listed alongside the cords (metharim). Spanish 'estaca' and French 'piquet' both preserve the concrete, functional sense. 19×

2. stake for tent security — A stake securing a tent's boundary, carrying metaphorical weight for permanence and expansion. In Isaiah 33:20 the stakes of Zion's tent 'will never be pulled up,' and in 54:2 God commands stretching the curtains and strengthening the stakes — a picture of covenant security. The multilingual evidence (Spanish 'sus estacas,' French 'son piquets') confirms the architectural stability nuance. 3×

3. pin for weaving or hanging — A pin used in weaving or mounted in a wall for hanging objects. In Judges 16:14 Delilah fastens Samson's hair with the weaver's pin (yethad), and in Isaiah 22:23-25 a peg fixed in a sure place symbolizes Eliakim's dependable leadership — until God removes it. Spanish 'estaca' and French 'pin' both track the functional tool sense. 2×
