familiar spirit, spiritist, medium

Senses
1. familiar spirit, spiritist, medium Masculine noun (יִדְּעֹנִי) denoting a practitioner of divination or necromancy, a 'knowing one' who claims to have access to the secrets of the unseen world through a familiar spirit. Derived from the root ידע ('to know'), the term designates one who possesses or consults a spirit of divination. It appears almost exclusively paired with אוֹב (H178, 'medium, necromancer') in legislative prohibitions and historical narratives: forbidden in the Holiness Code (Lev 19:31; 20:6, 27), banned alongside other occult practices in Deuteronomy (18:11), purged by Josiah (2 Kgs 23:24), yet practiced by Manasseh (2 Kgs 21:6; 2 Chr 33:6) and consulted by Saul through the medium at En-dor (1 Sam 28:3, 9). Also condemned in Isaiah (8:19; 19:3). All inflectional variants (singular, plural, with article, with conjunctions) refer to the same type of occult practitioner. 11×
