1. breastpiece, breastplate of judgment — Masculine noun חֹשֶׁן designating the priestly breastpiece (or breastplate of judgment), a square pouch set with twelve precious stones representing the twelve tribes, worn over the high priest's chest and attached to the ephod (Exod 25:7; 28:4, 15–30; 29:5; 35:9, 27; 39:8–21; Lev 8:8). All 25 occurrences describe the same ritual garment. The two clusters differ only in the presence or absence of the article (הַחֹשֶׁן 'the breastpiece' vs. חֹשֶׁן 'breastpiece of').
