Reproach, disgrace, shame; a social condition of dishonor or the verbal taunts that inflict it.
Cherpah names the sting of public shame — the condition of being exposed to scorn, contempt, or social disgrace. It appears in contexts ranging from personal humiliation (Tamar's plea in 2 Sam 13:13, 'where would I carry my cherpah?') to national catastrophe (the 'reproach of Egypt' rolled away at Gilgal, Josh 5:9). Spanish 'afrenta' and German 'Schmach' both carry the weight of dishonor that cuts to the bone. The word occasionally sharpens into the act itself — the verbal taunts hurled by enemies (Ps 69:9; Zeph 2:8) — and in Proverbs it points to an inherent moral defect that inevitably brings disgrace (Prov 6:33).
2. shameful defect, blemish A nuanced sense in which cherpah denotes an inherent defect, blemish, or moral failing that is itself the cause of disgrace rather than externally imposed scorn. In Prov 6:33 the adulterer's 'cherpah will not be wiped away,' and in Prov 18:3 wickedness brings cherpah as its natural consequence. Arabic cognate ʿayb (fault, defect) supports this distinction. Here the shame is not something inflicted from outside but something intrinsic to the person's condition — a permanent moral stain.

1. disgrace, shame, dishonor The broad and dominant sense of social disgrace, shame, or dishonor — a condition borne by persons or nations that marks them as objects of contempt. It encompasses Goliath's taunt that brings reproach on Israel (1 Sam 17:26), the uncircumcision called 'the reproach of Egypt' (Josh 5:9), and the psalmist's cry 'remove from me reproach and contempt' (Ps 119:22). French 'opprobre' and German 'Schmach' both capture the public, almost palpable nature of this shame. The word appears with numerous verbs — bear, remove, turn back, give — showing how reproach is experienced as a burden one carries or a stain one seeks to erase. 68×

3. taunts, verbal reproach The active, speech-oriented sense of verbal taunts, insults, or reviling directed at someone. In Ps 69:9 the taunts of those who reproach God fall on the psalmist, and Zeph 2:8 records the 'cherpot' (taunts) of Moab and Ammon against God's people. The plural form and the pairing with verbs of hearing ('I have heard the reproach') emphasize the spoken, aggressive dimension — not the resulting state of shame but the cutting words that produce it.
