Un término tardío para la aristocracia hereditaria que aparece casi exclusivamente en Nehemías, donde designa a los 'nobles' que, junto con los סְגָנִים ('oficiales'), constituían la élite gobernante de la Jerusalén postexílica. Nehemías se apoya en ellos y a la vez los reprende: ayudan a reconstruir los muros (Neh 4:14, 19), pero también se emparentan con la familia de Tobías (6:17) y explotan a los pobres (5:7). Usos anteriores sitúan a los nobles en la ciudad de Nabot (1 R 21:8, 11), en la corte judía de Jeremías (Jer 27:20; 39:6) y en el liderazgo condenado de Edom (Is 34:12).
