1. smoothness, flattery — Smoothness of speech, flattering words, or deceitful smooth talk. Used of lips that speak flattery and a double heart (Ps 12:2-3), of the smooth tongue of the adulteress (Prov 6:24, 'from the smoothness of the foreign woman's tongue'), and of Israel's prophets who speak smooth things and illusions rather than truth (Isa 30:10, 'speak to us smooth things'). The plural form chalaqot functions substantively to denote deceptive, pleasing speech that masks harmful intent. 4×

2. smooth part (of body) — The smooth, hairless part of the body. Used specifically of the smooth skin of Jacob's neck which Rebekah covered with goat skins so that Isaac would not detect the deception when blessing him in place of the hairy Esau (Gen 27:16, construct form chelqat). This is the concrete, physical sense of smoothness as opposed to the metaphorical sense of flattering speech. 1×

3. slippery places — Slippery or treacherous ground where one loses footing. Used metaphorically of the precarious position of the wicked whom God sets on slippery places so that they fall to ruin (Ps 73:18, 'You set them in slippery places; you cast them down to destruction'). The plural with article (bachalaqot) functions as a substantive denoting dangerously smooth terrain, serving as a metaphor for the unstable and ultimately disastrous condition of the prosperous wicked. 1×
