2. association, company — A masculine noun denoting a company, association, or fellowship of people bound together. Used of a shared or communal resource -- a house held in common (Prov 21:9; 25:24) -- and of a marauding band of priests lying in ambush along the road (Hos 6:9). The basic sense derives from the root ch-b-r (to join, bind together), emphasizing the bond uniting a group for a common purpose. 3×

1. spell, enchantment, charm — A masculine noun denoting a magical spell, enchantment, or incantation -- a binding charm that 'joins' supernatural forces. Prohibited in the Deuteronomic law code as an abomination: 'one who casts a binding spell' (Deut 18:11). Used of snake-charming incantations that the deaf adder refuses to hear (Ps 58:6), and of Babylon's extensive sorceries and enchantments in which she labored from her youth (Isa 47:9, 12). The sense derives metaphorically from the root ch-b-r (to bind), as spells were conceived as binding formulas. 4×
