1. insolent, arrogant, presumptuous — An adjective describing persons who are arrogant, insolent, or presumptuously defiant, always used in a negative moral sense of opposition to God or His law. Predominantly found in Psalm 119 (vv. 21, 51, 69, 78, 85, 122) describing those who scorn the psalmist's devotion to Torah, and in prophetic/wisdom texts (Ps 19:13, 86:14; Prov 21:24; Isa 13:11; Jer 43:2; Mal 3:15, 4:1). The singular zed in Prov 21:24 identifies the 'proud and arrogant' individual. Arabic al-mutakabbirun ('the arrogant ones'), Korean gyomanhan jadeul ('arrogant ones'), Spanish soberbios ('proud ones') consistently confirm a single semantic field of insolent pride. 13×
