Rebuke, reproof, threatening censure — especially the awe-inspiring rebuke of God
Denotes a forceful verbal censure that ranges from a wise man's corrective reproof to the terrifying blast of divine wrath. In the wisdom literature, one rebuke to a discerning person outweighs a hundred blows to a fool (Prov 17:10), and the rebuke of the wise is better than the song of fools (Eccl 7:5). Far more dramatic is God's rebuke: the sea flees at it (Ps 104:7), the foundations of the world are laid bare (Ps 18:15), and warriors fall stunned before it (Ps 76:6). Isaiah envisions a day when a thousand flee at the rebuke of one (Isa 30:17).
