Exile, captivity; collectively, the community of deportees carried away from their homeland
A feminine noun capturing both the bitter condition of forced displacement and the people who endure it. In its abstract sense it marks the onset of captivity — Ezekiel dates his visions by 'the year of our exile' (Ezek 1:2; 33:21; 40:1), and Jeconiah's release is reckoned from his exile year (2 Kgs 25:27). In its collective sense it names the exiled community itself: 'the exiles of Judah' whom God promises to restore (Jer 24:5; 28:4; 29:22), or 'my exiles' whom the LORD declares free through Cyrus (Isa 45:13). Amos indicts Philistia and Tyre for trafficking entire exile-communities (Amos 1:6, 9).
Senses
1. exile, captivity, exiled community — The state or condition of exile and captivity, and by metonymic extension the collective body of deportees. Used absolutely for the experience of banishment (2 Kgs 25:27; Ezek 1:2; 33:21), in construct chains for specific exiled groups ('exiles of Judah,' Jer 24:5; 'exiles of Cush,' Isa 20:4), and with divine suffixes for Yahweh's own displaced people (Isa 45:13). All six target languages converge on a single meaning: exile/captivity (spa 'cautividad', fra 'exil', deu 'Verbannung'). 15×
