Gazzam appears exclusively in the post-exilic census lists as the ancestor of a family of Nethinim (temple servants) who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel. Like Barkos and other names in these lists, Gazzam represents a family line that maintained its identity through the Babylonian exile and chose to return to serve in the rebuilt temple. The name's etymology is uncertain, though it may relate to cutting or devouring.
