Senses
1. robbery, plunder, spoil — The act of seizing property by force or violence, or the goods so seized. Hebrew gezēlāh is the abstract/concrete noun from the root g-z-l 'to tear away, rob.' Used in legal contexts for the restitution of stolen property (Leviticus 5:23), in prophetic denunciations of social injustice (Isaiah 3:14, Ezekiel 18:7,12,16, 33:15), covering both the act of robbery and the plundered goods themselves. Morphological variants (absolute, construct, plural, with article) all express this single meaning. 6×
