1. hewn stone, dressed stone — Stone that has been cut, dressed, or hewn into regular blocks for construction purposes, as distinct from rough fieldstone. The term gāzīt derives from the root g-z-z 'to cut' and always occurs in building contexts: the prohibition against using hewn stones for the altar (Exodus 20:25), Solomon's temple and palace construction (1 Kings 5-7), the rebuilding prophecy of Isaiah 9:10, and Ezekiel's temple vision (40:42).
