Shearing, fleece; mowing, mown grass — what is cut from sheep or from a field
Denotes the product of cutting, whether wool shorn from animals or grass mown from a field. In Deuteronomy 18:4 the 'shearing of your flock' belongs among the priestly dues owed to the Levites. Job 31:20 invokes the fleece of his own sheep as evidence of his generosity toward the poor. Psalm 72:6 uses the image of rain falling on mown grass to portray the gentle, refreshing reign of the ideal king. Amos 7:1 references the 'king's mowings' — a royal first-cut of hay — as the setting for a locust-plague vision.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Shearing or fleece — the wool cut from sheep, viewed as a valuable product. In Deut 18:4 it is listed alongside grain, wine, and oil as a priestly portion: 'the first fleece of your sheep.' In Job 31:20 the fleece warms the needy, serving as a measure of the righteous man's compassion. The Aramaic cognate gizza and Assyrian gizzu confirm the core meaning of shorn wool. Spanish 'esquileo' (shearing) and English 'fleece' both center on the act and its product. In Ps 72:6 and Amos 7:1 the semantic field extends to mown grass or meadow, with 'the king's mowings' in Amos denoting a royal prerogative of first harvest. 4×
