Body (living or dead); corpse, carcass — of humans in life, death, or visionary imagery
A feminine noun referring to the physical body, whether living or dead. In Genesis 47:18, the Israelites offer their bodies (geviyyotenu) to Pharaoh when famine exhausts all other resources — a living body pledged in desperation. In 1 Samuel 31:10-12, the same word names the fallen corpses of Saul and his sons hung on Beth-shan's wall. Ezekiel's living creatures have geviyyot as their bodily frames (Ezek 1:11, 23), while Daniel sees a figure whose geviyyah gleams like beryl (Dan 10:6). The word spans the full arc from breathing flesh to battlefield remains, with a notable appearance for Samson's lion carcass (Judg 14:8-9).

Senses
1. body, corpse The physical body in its full range — living, dead, or visionary. When applied to the living, it denotes the corporeal frame as a whole (Gen 47:18; Dan 10:6; Ezek 1:11, 23). When applied to the dead, it means corpse or carcass, as with Saul's body on the wall of Beth-shan (1 Sam 31:10, 12) or heaped battlefield dead (Ps 110:6; Nah 3:3). Spanish cadáveres and cuerpo mirror this living/dead duality; French and German similarly use corps and Leib without distinguishing the two conditions. 13×
